SCANIA LEAF SPRINGS?

HERE ARE THE MOST COMMON
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What are the functions of a leaf spring on my Scania Truck?

Despite its name, a leaf spring serves multiple purposes. Its main function is to link the axle and chassis, making it a crucial component. The leaf spring is responsible for keeping the axle in the correct direction and is a crucial component of the suspension system that works together with shock absorbers, bump stops, and stabilizer bars.

Why did the leaf spring break in my Scania Truck?

Leaf spring breakages in Scania Truck can have several causes including micro cracks on the surface, non-metallic inclusions, improper heat treatment process, surface decarbonization, corrosion, continuous overloading, intensive suspension usage due to poor road conditions, and design mistakes by vehicle manufacturers.

Is it safe to drive a Scania Truck with a broken leaf spring?

The safety depends on where the leaf spring broke, whether it's a single leaf or spring pack, which leaf is broken, vehicle load status, presence of stabilizer bar, and your risk tolerance. The most dangerous situation is when the main leaf spring breaks between the axle and front fixing point without a stabilizer bar.

Can a Scania Truck leaf spring be repaired with welding?

Unfortunately, while spring steels do have some weldability, the welding process causes changes in the steel structure around the joint, resulting in lack of homogeneity. A welded leaf spring will break very soon (a few weeks).

Importance of Proper Torque for Scania Truck Leaf Spring U-Bolt Nuts

U-bolts must be tightened to specific torque values: M8: 35 Nm, M10: 75 Nm, M12: 130 Nm, M14: 200 Nm, M16: 315 Nm, M18: 440 Nm, M20: 610 Nm, M22: 830 Nm. These values apply to surfaces free of oil or grease. U-bolts must be retightened after 1,000 km to 5,000 km.
